72% of the earth is covered with water. Yet only 0.5% of this water is freshwater and usable for human civilization. However, in spite of such scarcity, population explosion and massive industrialization has polluted most of these freshwater bodies.

What causes Lake Pollution? The quality of water is mainly deteriorated by human activities. The domestic wastewater from residential areas along with the effluent of industries is disposed off into the open drains and gutters which enter local water bodies and rivers, hence polluting them.

Characteristics of Wastewater Wastewater is characterized by grey colour, musty odor, contains 0.1 % solids and 99.9% water.

Different type Pollutants of Lakes:

The lake pollution can be of several types such as:

  • Nutrient Pollution (occurs when excess nitrogen and phosphorus make their way into a lake leading to lake eutrophication wherein a sudden increase in algal bloom is observed in the lake water),
  • Metal Pollution (occurs when heavy metal such as lead, cadmium, etc. gets mixed in the lake water),
  • Sediment (Fine-grained particles like silt and clay may occur naturally in the environment but when they enter lakes in large quantity, they become a serious pollution problem),
  • Total Dissolved Solids (due to high concentrations of dissolved calcium, phosphates, sodium, chloride, or potassium, etc.).
